European Teacher Wellbeing and Career Observatory Launches an Index to Measure Teacher Wellbeing Across Europe

The European Teacher Wellbeing and Career Observatory invites teachers across Europe to share their experiences and contribute to a stronger evidence base on wellbeing, career development and working conditions.

How are teachers really doing across Europe? What influences their wellbeing, what challenges do they face throughout their careers, and what support do they need?

The European Teacher Wellbeing and Career Observatory is launching an online Index to examine teachers’ wellbeing, professional needs, working conditions, career experiences and professional development opportunities.

Through ongoing research, the Observatory aims to develop evidence-informed recommendations for policy and practice, supporting the teaching profession and engaging key stakeholders across education.

Teachers across Europe are invited to participate and share their perspectives.

Measuring Teacher Wellbeing and Identifying Professional Needs

The Index uses a structured measurement framework to explore three complementary aspects of teachers’ professional lives.

1. Professional Background and Career Experiences

The questionnaire collects information on teachers’ demographic and educational backgrounds, employment conditions, career progression and prospects, and participation in professional development activities.

2. Wellbeing and Burnout Assessment

The Index incorporates three established assessment tools to examine workplace wellbeing, subjective wellbeing and indicators of burnout.

3. Teachers’ Experiences and Perspectives

Open-ended questions invite teachers to describe their main professional challenges and suggest improvements. By combining structured data with teachers’ own perspectives, the Observatory aims to identify patterns, explore common challenges and better understand educators’ needs across different professional and educational contexts.

Assessment Tools

The Index incorporates the following instruments:

  • Positive Functioning at Work Scale (PF-W) — Donaldson & Donaldson (2020).
  • Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) — Schaufeli, Desart & De Witte (2020).
  • Ερωτηματολόγιο υποκειμενικής ευζωίας των εκπαιδευτικών (TSWQ) — Renshaw (2020).

From Data Collection to European Evidence

Survey responses will inform the Wellbeing Observatory Report, offering insights into teachers’ wellbeing, career experiences and professional needs across Europe.

The findings will be shared through the Observatory website, partner networks, communications, events and other European dissemination activities. By building a stronger evidence base, the Observatory aims to inform discussions and recommendations concerning teacher wellbeing, working conditions and professional development.

Your Voice. Your Wellbeing. A Stronger Future for Europe’s Teachers.

Teachers’ experiences are essential to understanding the realities and challenges of the profession. By participating in the survey, you can contribute to a clearer picture of educators’ needs and help strengthen the evidence available to support teachers across Europe.

Share your experience. Contribute to the evidence. Help shape the future of teacher wellbeing.
